DUTIES

  • The Head of Metadata & Preservation Services position is responsible for resource discovery via bibliographic organization and maintenance of collection resources in all formats for the University Libraries, including the following: Dental Library, Health Sciences Library, LaBudde Special Collections and Archives, Law Library, Marr Sound Archives, Miller Nichols Library, and the Music/Media Library.
  • Perform original cataloging and retrospective conversion of materials in all formats. Create authority records for all access points, as required.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of the online catalog. Oversee the management of operations involving MARC cataloging, metadata management, and catalog maintenance, processing, and preservation of physical materials.
  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate daily operations of special cataloging projects.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate four Library Specialists (4.0 FTE) and one student assistant (.5 FTE); coordinating goals with the Special Collections and Archives division, which serves the entire University Libraries.
  • Participate and report on professional activities.
  • Keep current with national developments in the field of academic librarianship, metadata, and preservation.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Promoted to the rank of Librarian II in 1999 and to the rank of Librarian III in 2008.
  • Active participation in the national NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program) and NACO Music Project which entailed creating authoritative versions of names (individual, corporate, conference, title) according to stringent national standards, and contributing these headings into a national online catalog database.
  • Oversee the provision of bibliographic access to items in the University Libraries (Miller Nichols Library, Music/Media Library, Marr Sound Archives, LaBudde Department of Special Collections, Health Sciences Library, and the Dental Library).
  • Contributed to the successful completion of a Mellon Foundation grant three-year project to catalog 9949 transcription discs as part of the J. David Goldin Collection in the Marr Sound Archive. Project successfully completed 2011.
  • Contributed to the application for UMKC as one of the first recipients of a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Digital Imaging grant from the Missouri State Library.  Oversaw the bibliographic description of over 250 analog and digital items for the online exhibit Voices of World War II: Experiences from the Front and at Home.  Developed “best practices” for providing online access to digital audio collections.  Site launched in September, 2002.
  • Oversaw the project to provide bibliographic access to all 869 items in the Kansas City Sheet Music Collection that formed the basis for the libraries’ online exhibit, launched in April, 2003. Oversaw the project to provide bibliographic access to over 5100 items in the Popular American Music Sheet Music Collection housed in the Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections.
  • Provided bibliographic access to over 300 items of WWI sheet music and sound recordings that formed the basis for the libraries’ online exhibit on WWI music, in concert with the grand re-opening of Kansas City’s Liberty Memorial Museum.  Site launched in December, 2006.
  • Provided bibliographic access to the rare and unique Frank Driggs cassette collection of oral histories of jazz personalities.
  • Oversaw several projects to reclass materials for the Music/Media Library including over 14,000 scores classified with the British Scores Classification System to Library of Congress classification, and 890 music videos with arbitrary call numbers to Library of Congress classification.
  • Successfully proposed reclassing and upgrading Library Assistant I to Library Specialist II, and finally to academic appointment of Special Formats Cataloger.

1994
