This
was the first book to be printed with movable type—on the new printing
press invented by Johannes Gutenberg. He printed about 200 copies
around the year 1455. If you are trying to read the words, you
need to know that it was printed in Latin. This new technology
opened up the opportunity to learn and study because it allowed the
written word to be reproduced and distributed quickly, cheaply, and in
huge quantities. In less than 50 years after the printing of this
page, more than 10 million printed books had been produced.
Wow! Gutenberg's invention truly was revolutionary! Most
important is the fact that it helped to place God's Word in the hands of
everyone—not just the church leaders. |
