Thomas G. Stein, tuba, is Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium
at The University of Missouri - Kansas City. A native of Michigan, he received the
Bachelor of Music (with high distinction) and the Master of Music degrees in Tuba
Performance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Prior to coming to Missouri,
Stein taught at Central Michigan University, The University of Colorado at Boulder,
and The University of Southern Mississippi. He has performed with numerous orchestras,
wind ensembles, and chamber ensembles: Fountain City Brass Band, Solo Eb tuba; Mississippi
Symphony, principal tuba; Colorado Mahler Festival Orchestra, principal tuba; Colorado
Festival Orchestra; Aspen Festival and Chamber Orchestras; Detroit Symphony; American
Tuba Euphonium Quartet; Twisted Steel Quartet; Missouri Brass Quintet; Capital Brass;
and the Colorado Brass Quintet to name a few. Stein is the recipient of UMKC's 2005-2006
Muriel McBrien Kauffman Excellence in Teaching Award.
Stein is very active throughout the United States as a recitalist, clinician, and a soloist. As a Soloist/Artist he has appeared with several orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the U.S., has been featured in variety of state, regional and national/international conferences including the 2000, 2002 and 2008 International Tuba-Euphonium Conferences, 2006 U.S. Army Band Tuba Euphonium Conference; 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference; the 2003 University of Central Arkansas OcTUBAfest; the 1996, 1997 and 1998 Southeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conferences; and has appeared in six European countries and at numerous Universities throughout the U.S.
Stein's students are very active and successful in state, regional, national and international competitions. Recently, his students have won numerous awards in major competitions: International Tuba-Euphonium Solo and Quartet Competitions; Falcone Solo Euphonium Competition (Artist Division); International Womens Brass Conference Solo Competition; Colonial Euphonium-Tuba Institute Solo Euphonium Competition; National Music Teachers Association State, Regional and National Collegiate Artist Solo Competitions; National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors National Solo Competition; Great Plains Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference Solo and Quartet Competitions; Texas Regional Tuba - Euphonium Conference Solo Competition; the Southeast Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference Solo and Quartet Competitions; Tubonium Tuba Euphonium Conference; the North American Brass Band Association Ensemble Competition; and the U.S. Open Brass Band Championship Solo Competition.
Stein has studied with Abe Torchinsky, Warren Deck, Wesley Jacobs, and Rex Conner.
