Biography
Rebecca Sherburn is an Associate Professor of Voice at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Her current and former students perform widely, teach voice on many levels from public schools to Universities, apprentice at various opera companies and have won National and Regional competitions.
 
As an opera singer her performing experiences are varied, and international with 20 roles to her credit. Through the 1990’s she was a "fest" singer in various opera houses in Germany. She has also been featured by a variety of regional opera companies in the United States.  In addition to vast standard repertoire, she has distinguished herself as a concert artist performing many rarely heard contemporary chamber works. A number of compositions have been written for her voice.
 
She has received awards and grants from foundations including: The Figtree Foundation, The Blount Foundation, The Opera Buffs of Southern California, and The Astral Foundation. During her training, she was an Apprentice at the Zurich Opera in Switzerland, a scholarship student at the Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival, and she won the regional Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, the Viktor Fuchs Award, the Annual Aspen Voice Competition, and the American Opera Awards.
 
 
In 2004 Dr. Sherburn won the Kauffman Award for Teaching Excellence at UMKC. Her articles have been published by ACDA Choral Journal, NATS Journal of Singing and CMS Symposium.  Her undergraduate degree is from California State University-Los Angeles, Master and Doctoral degrees are from the University of Southern California. Dr. Sherburn joined the Conservatory faculty in 1999.
