Associate Professor Daniel Price Hopkins, Ph.D., Louisiana State University, 1987, is a historical geographer, specializing in the geography of colonialism in the Atlantic world in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In particular, he studies the Danish colonies in the Caribbean islands and on the west coast of Africa. Much of his work has dealt with colonial mapmaking, which was a crucial element in the complex and difficult communication of geographic information of all kinds between the colonies and the European mother country. Dr. Hopkins raw materials are the original manuscript administrative records and various other collections of correspondence preserved in archives and libraries, mainly in Denmark, as well as contemporary publications.
