UMKC is located in
Kansas City MO, which forms the core of a bi-state metropolitan area having
a total population of 1.8 million. In contrast with the typical state
university town, Kansas City is the home of the Royals and the Chiefs and
offers a full range of cultural activities including the Nelson-Atkins and Kemper art museums, the Belger
Center for the Creative Arts, the Missouri Repertory Theater, and the Kansas
City Symphony.
The UMKC Department of Geosciences is centrally
located on the main Volker campus’ attractively wooded grounds and is less
than a half
mile from the Country Club Plaza shopping and entertainment area. The rich
resources of the privately endowed Linda Hall Library of
Engineering, Science and Technology are less than a block from our offices
and labs. The department offers coursework in atmospheric sciences,
environmental science, geography, and geology, leading to undergraduate
degrees in environmental studies, geography and geology. A unique M.S. -
Urban Environmental Geology program exemplifies a distinct departmental
focus on application of the geosciences to human activities and UMKC to be a
campus without borders committed to the education and benefit of the entire
community. The department also participates in a visionary
interdisciplinary doctoral degree program
instituted at UMKC in 1991. Our student body is diverse and international.
Faculty and students conduct their research around the world. As can be seen
from further review of the departmental web site, current areas of
investigation are located in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and, of
course, North America. We welcome you to read on, to visit us and to
consider joining our educational community.
