UNESCO
appoints Geosciences Department and the Center for Applied
Environmental Research(CAER) Technical Network Partners
The Department
of Geosciences at UMKC and its Center for Applied
Environmental Research were recently appointed Technical
Network Partners in the UNESCO crosscutting project on the
Application of Remote Sensing for Integrated Management of
Eco-systems and Water Resources in Africa. As part of this
formal engagement between UMKC and UNESCO,
Dr. Jimmy Adegoke, Geoscience's Assistant Professor, was
invited to serve on the Advisory Committee of remote sensing
experts that will assist UNESCO assess ongoing country-level
projects in various African countries. During summer 2003,
Dr. Adegoke completed project evolution missions to Botswana
and Zimbabwe for UNESCO.
This
crosscutting project is intersectoral in nature, bringing
together the major programmatic sectors of UNESCO including
Education, Sciences and Culture: the three pillars of the
Organization. The project will help develop and test a
process that will enable African countries to access and use
satellite data, geographic information systems and
communication systems for monitoring changes to water
resources, vulnerable ecosystems and associated depletion of
resources. The project also promotes biodiversity
conservation through Education in Remote Sending-related and
Communication-related Technical and Scientific Capacity
Building.
